Technology

CFOs have shifted their focus from simply providing services to aligning IT strategy with business needs — while cutting costs and maintaining security. Will the Solaris 10 OS provide the necessary paradigm shift in efficiencies?

IT organizations want to be more responsive and efficient. They can no longer afford a data center model that requires dedicated servers to address specific applications, testing, development, staging, training, and production.

Technology

Features Overview

Delivers high performance with features such as HTTP1.1, multithreading, and support for SSL hardware accelerators

  • Offers high-availability features including support for multiple processes and process monitors, as well as dynamic log rotation

  • Provides enterprise-wide manageability features including delegated administration, cluster management, and LDAP integration with Netscape Directory Server

  • Supports development of server-side Java and JavaScript applications that access database information using native drivers

    Platform and System Requirements

High-Performance Web Server for E-Commerce

iPlanet Web Server is powerful web server software essential for enterprises moving their business to the Internet. By providing high performance, reliability, and manageability, iPlanet Web Server solves the business-critical needs of some of the world's busiest web sites. iPlanet Web Server also enables rapid development and deployment of web-based applications that can enhance communication, streamline processes, and reduce costs.

High Performance and Scalability

Business-critical web sites need to provide fast and reliable service to employees, partners, and customers. iPlanet Web Server delivers high performance through optimized caching, symmetric multiprocessor support, advanced use of kernel threads, HTTP 1.1 support, and sophisticated memory management. In addition, iPlanet Web Server supports several third-party SSL hardware accelerator devices, a capability that improves performance significantly during SSL computations.

Leading Reliability and Availability

Because business on the Internet operates globally, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, web sites cannot afford downtime. High-availability features include support for multiple processes and process monitors. If a web application fails, only a single web server process goes down. The remaining processes provide failover support to keep the web site available to customers. Process monitors automatically restart the failed process without requiring intervention by a network administrator. To further enhance availability, iPlanet Web Server features a dynamic log rotation feature that enables administrators to rotate server logs without shutting down the server.

Centralized Server Management

iPlanet Web Server management tools help bring down the cost of managing and maintaining a web site. Administrators use these tools to manage users and monitor server activity in real time. By using any Lightweight Directory Access Protocol (LDAP)-based directory or the integrated Netscape Directory Server, iPlanet Web Server provides a centralized point from which to easily add, change, and delete user information. Cluster management enables administrators to manage multiple remote servers as a single group, start or stop a group of servers, or update configuration files remotely. Distributed administration enables an administrator to selectively delegate capabilities to specific individuals.

Rapid Application Development

Web-based applications increase productivity by enabling business professionals to share, manage, process, and find information over the Internet. Because iPlanet Web Server applications are based on HTML, JavaScript, and Java, they can be easily customized and extended to fit the information management needs of an enterprise. In addition, these applications are based on Internet-standard protocols for deployment across different networks, operating systems, and databases, allowing them to be extended to external partners and customers on an extranet. Along with traditional server extensions such as CGI and NSAPI, iPlanet Web Server provides a powerful development environment. The LiveWire database service, included in iPlanet Web Server, provides native database connectivity to information stored in Oracle, Informix, IBM DB2, and Sybase databases.

Information Sharing and Management

iPlanet Web Server improves an enterpriseนs ability to publish, share, and find information by providing advanced features for publishing and managing static and dynamic content. Its flexible, Internet-ready access controls allow an author to easily specify who may view and edit documents in the content store, allowing workgroups to manage and share critical information. This fine-grained access to resources managed by iPlanet Web Server is integrated seamlessly with the directory and security services through open Internet protocols such as Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) and LDAP. In addition, this information can be automatically versioned by MKS's embedded revision control system and indexed by Verity's embedded integrated search engine to make this information easier to share and manage.
